Factors That Contribute to Poor Math Performance ââ¬Å"Nineteen comes before twenty all over the world,â⬠as English teacher Mr. Newkirk would say. The meaning behind this saying is that no matter where someone goes in this world math and numbers are virtually the same. With the similarity throughout each culture, one would assume math would be a strong subject with the masses; however, a majority of people struggle with mathematics. Factors that contribute to poor performance can include, but are not limited to, poor attitude towards math, short attention spans, and peer pressure. Studies have been conducted, and they show that there is a relationship between a studentââ¬â¢s attitude and their achievement (Mensah et al 134). Through simple observations, almost anyone can notice this correlation without having to do extensive research. Having a more positive attitude creates the opportunity for learning and motivation which leads to success no matter their past performance ( Congos 1). While observing a class, one might notice the children sigh of disappointment or roll their eyes when hearing they have to work on math. Some of them same students are usually the ones who make lower grades than the ones who just go with the flow or get excited about having to do math. A major factor that people may not always see is a studentââ¬â¢s attitude towards their teacher. Attitudes towards teachers have a great affect on how a child does in academics. Discrimination And Diversity - 1285 Words
Discrimination comes in many forms. Discrimination and diversity are closely linked considering the reasons behind discrimination are what makes up the definition of diversity. Not only is discrimination made against gender, race, and religion, but it is also made of age, disabilities, appearance and in a lot of cases, women who are pregnant too. This is very much a reality for many employers. There are laws protecting acts of discrimination. This topic is so sensitive, that many employers implement diversity and discrimination into their mission statements. Many companies make it their practice to host training sessions to prevent discrimination from happening, then there are many companies who canââ¬â¢t afford such training for theirâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦For instance; my direct boss, the Controller of the hospital, only has an associateââ¬â¢s degree in business. She has been with the company for 40 years and has worked her way up in rank throughout her time th ere. Within the department that I work, I do not see signs of discrimination based on what I see hired in on a regular basis and the already existing employees. We have people of all nationalities (within reason considering the community make-up), women who were pregnant at the time of hire and individuals of all ages and educational backgrounds. I feel it is important for employers to make diversity and discrimination known within the workplace. Employers need to be aware that there is such thing as implicit discrimination. ââ¬Å"This form of discrimination occurs subliminally without an individual necessarily even being aware of itâ⬠(Ruthergien, 2016, p. 22). If an employee is not taught what discrimination is, how will they know if they are committing an act of discrimination. Not all acts of discrimination are obvious or common knowledge. Knowledge is power and the more employees know about the topic, the more aware they will be and less likely to make the mistake in discriminating somebody. Hypocrisy is a huge theme of Maycombââ¬â¢s society and community spirit. For example, racism plays a huge role. In the Tom Robinson trial, he is accused of raping Bob Ewellââ¬â¢s daughter, Mayella. But then again in her own community people are persecuting blacks the same way. Another example similar to this is Mrs. Merriweather talks about saving the poor Mruans from Africa but thinks black people in her community are a disgrace. Scout and Jem throughout the book later discover the hypocrisy in the adult world. Some examples would be, Aunt Alexandriaââ¬â¢s view on the Cunninghamââ¬â¢s, Lula not wanting her kids to go into a black church etc: Jem noticed the hypocrisy in the Lula situation was Lula complaining about all white people being prejudice against them but in her hate for whites and their prejudice she is also being racist and prejudice.
